Dark Light

What’s up with the guitars this year ? They seem to be making a smashing comeback. Just as Jack White predicted in one of his many interviews. And the best place to look for some of the most promising guitar work right now is, de facto, London in the United Kingdom. The British capital has historically supplied the rest of the world with great bands like Shame and other fantastic outfits such as FORMATION you should get acquainted with if you haven’t already. Because today we’re shedding some light on Black Midi and you guessed it, they’re from the same patch.

Black Midi are a progressive noise rock band that met at Brit School, which gave us the famed alumni superstars like Adele, Amy Winehouse and bands like The Kooks. So it’s something to keep in mind, they haven’t come anywhere… The four-piece graduated last summer and formed the band made of Geordie Greep and lead guitarist Matt Kelvin, drummer Morgan Simpson and bassist Cameron Picton.

Black Midi went on to perform a string of shows and were so good they finally got a shot at big time shows after securing a slot opening for Shame. All of that based off their sole live show. Without any music online or anything which, nowadays, is quite the feat. Or at least not as an outfit. Here’s Morgan Simpson, the drummer, covering “Reality Check” by Noname on his own Youtube channel a while back:

The band quickly drew attention and Dan Carey the famed producer behind the Speedy Wunderground project that invites bands, artists and other up-and-coming creatives to work on a track in the space of a day without a Lunch break realised the potential tsunami they could have pressed on record. These are the two tracks Black Midi released so far. “Bmbmbm” (the first single) and its b-side titled “Savage Gary’s DbDbDb”. You’ll immediately find that the tracks are far from what we’re used to put forward on Sodwee.com. But we dug the groove and percussions along with the unforgiving guitar riffs on offer so much we couldn’t pass the opportunity.

The band is no doubt destined for international success and is already planning some headlining tour around Europe and who knows, might follow their elders “Shame” in their rise. In any case we sure hope to see them live sooner rather than later here in Paris. And actually have a taste of our own and see what all the rage is about.
