Out now on Rough Trade. <strong>SOAK <\/strong>aka Bridie has been at her good game since the tender age of 14, in her hometown of Derry, co-managed by her loving parents until 17 years old and being scouted for her stunning voice, simple approach to composition and the easy comparison with acts such as\u00a0<em>Laura Marling<\/em> and <em>Beach House.<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u2018Before We Forgot How to Dream\u2019 is a stunning snapshot of <strong>SOAK<\/strong>\u2019s formative years growing up in Northern Ireland, touching variously on the themes of isolation, family and what to do with your future.<\/p>\n<p>SOAK\u2019s debut album traces her extraordinary journey to this point, and marks Bridie\u2019s graduation from raw talent to a significant songwriter for the years ahead. Monikers sometimes help us understand the direction of an artist but in your case it\u2019s actually quite misguiding because it refers to two different styles (Soul & Folk) that your music is not, right\u00a0?<\/h5>\n<p>Exactly\u00a0! I was in a band when I was twelve and we were called That\u2019s What She Said and when I finished that I wanted to do something on my own but I thought it was lazy to give it the same name than my actual name. That\u2019s where the <strong>SOAK<\/strong> came from. My music isn\u2019t either of those things though ! (laughing) I just like how it sounds.<\/p>\n<h5 id=\"your-first-album-before-we-forget-how-to-dream-is-due-in-june-but-youve-been-making-music-for-quite-a-lot-time-i-guess-some-of-the-songs-were-created-a-while-back-do-you-still-relat\">Your first album, Before We Forget How To Dream, is due in June but you\u2019ve been making music for quite a lot time.\u00a0 I guess some of the songs were created a while back. Do you still relate to your \u00ab\u00a0old\u00a0\u00bb songs\u00a0?<\/h5>\n<p>In a different way now \u2019cause obviously it\u2019s been years since I wrote Sea Creatures for instance. Some songs like Be A Nobody are very soft and there are also songs like Reckless Behaviour and Hailstones Don\u2019t Hurt which are catchier. Which ones do you feel more comfortable with\u00a0?<\/h5>\n<p>I think all my songs are pretty self-confessional and I\u2019m comfortable playing all of them on stage live.<\/p>\n<h5 id=\"theres-actually-one-song-which-is-quite-different-oh-brother-you-sound-full-of-rage-on-it\">There\u2019s actually one song which is quite different, Oh Brother. You sound full of rage on it\u00a0!<\/h5>\n<p>Yeah\u00a0! I tried to use my vocals in differents to kind of portray different emotions. With Oh Brother, the nature of the song is aggressive anyway so it\u2019s only fitting. \u00a0Be A Nobody for me is my mid-life crisis, rather a quarter-life crisis (laughing). All my friends were finishing school and my brother left university, I wrote Oh Brother kind of in the same way. It adds a bit of color.<\/p>\n<h5 id=\"you-started-making-music-when-you-were-12-and-you-made-it-pretty-clear-to-your-parents-that-school-was-not-your-thing-did-they-support-you-on-your-choice\">You started making music when you were 12 and you made it pretty clear to your parents that school was not your thing. Did they support you on your choice\u00a0?<\/h5>\n<p>Yeah, they co-managed me from 15 up to I was 17. They were really really supportive and my friends were as well.<\/p>\n<h5 id=\"you-come-from-derry-a-city-sadly-known-because-of-the-troubles-can-you-describe-the-music-scene-in-northern-ireland\">You come from Derry, a city sadly known because of the Troubles. Can you describe the music scene in Northern Ireland\u00a0?<\/h5>\n<p>It comes in waves, whether there\u2019s a lot going on and then there\u2019s not. Why did you pick that song\u00a0?<\/h5>\n<p>My label asked me to do a cover for an American magazine and I chose that song because it\u2019s a very strong song. My original idea was, you know when she does the whole \u00ab\u00a0yeah\u00a0\u00bb part, I wanted to do a printer but I didn\u2019t have time to do it. How do you react when you discovered you were in the list\u00a0?<\/h5>\n<p>Are you sure <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sodwee.com\/blog\/2015\/05\/itw-lapsley\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lapsley<\/a><\/em> is not younger\u00a0? I\u2019ll ask her\u00a0! (laughing) That was crazy. I didn\u2019t actually expect it. I mean usually you\u2019ve got tipped or you\u2019ve got an idea and I genuinely got no idea at all\u00a0! It just kind of happened. I didn\u2019t realize how big it was until it got announced and everybody went crazy and I was like \u00ab\u00a0Holy Shit\u00a0!\u00a0\u00bb (laughing) It\u2019s an incredible thing to be part of. Just to be in it was really exciting.<\/p>\n<h5 id=\"finally-whats-on-your-playlist-right-now\">Finally, what\u2019s on your playlist right now\u00a0?<\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sodwee.com\/blog\/2015\/04\/bite-the-bullet-listen-to-teeth-by-the-japanese-house\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Japanese House<\/em><\/a>, not a lot of people have heard of them. I listen to them and <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sodwee.com\/blog\/2015\/03\/new-music-shura-2shy\/\" target=\"_blank\">Shura<\/a><\/em>, she\u2019s a good friend of mine. I\u2019ve also been listening to <em>Sun Kill Moon<\/em>, it\u2019s really good\u00a0!
