Shortly afterwards she calls and changes the location of our meeting from Bill\u2019s Coffee (where she used to work) to Musikhuset (where I would see her perform to a packed room the next evening). I had an idea for the\u00a0Break-up Battle video and we were going to get a production company to do it, but we know lots of people, so we gathered our own team and did it ourselves. The cast is a mixture of our friends and people we found on Facebook.<\/p>\n<h5 id=\"you-just-got-back-from-colombia-did-you-get-a-taste-of-latin-music-while-there\">You just got back from Colombia, did you get a taste of latin music\u00a0while there?<\/h5>\n<p>Yes, the public sphere there is filled with latin music. In Denmark, we don\u2019t really have folk music that everyone loves and that everyone feels is part is part of their culture, but I think it\u2019s so uniting \u2013 everyone\u2019s dansing salsa and loves that vibe. It was very inspiring.<\/p>\n<h5 id=\"can-you-see-yourself-doing-something-with-that-kind-of-music\">Can you see yourself doing something with that kind of music?<\/h5>\n<p>Definitely. I loved Hotline Bling for example. Some kinds of music just ooze joie de vivre \u2013 I\u2019d like to take that essence and use it.<\/p>\n<h5 id=\"youre-from-naestved-denmark-which-is-quite-small-i-gather-but-youre-also-half-american\">You\u2019re from Naestved, Denmark, which is quite small, I gather, but you\u2019re also half-American?<\/h5>\n<p>It is. The population is about 40k.\u00a0My mum is\u00a0from Baltimore and we used to go there in the summer or for Christmas: it was the best.<\/p>\n<h5 id=\"do-you-think-your-interest-in-black-music-has-a-connection-to-your-roots\">Do you think your interest in black music has a connection to your roots?<\/h5>\n<p>For sure. My mum listened to motown and artists like Randy Crawford when I ws a kid, and I definitely found inspiration in that. Also, going to the States influenced what I listened to: my cousins were listening to artists like Genuine and R Kelly. In Denmark there was a big pop scene, and I was more into US hip-hop and jazz, soul, blues, RnB, etc.<\/p>\n<h5 id=\"youve-mentioned-erykah-badu-as-an-influence-what-do-you-like-about-her\">You\u2019ve mentioned\u00a0Erykah Badu as an influence \u2013 what do you like about her?<\/h5>\n<p>Her originality. I love how she mixes\u00a0rapping and singing, and explores a range of\u00a0subjects, not just love.<\/p>\n<h5 id=\"most-of-your-material-so-far-has-been-about-love-relationships-right\">Most of your material\u00a0so far has been about love & relationships, right?<\/h5>\n<p>Yes, the tracks I\u2019ve released anyway, but I write about all kinds of stuff. Lately I\u2019ve been writing about ego\/identity\/what goes on in the self, detached from other relationships.<\/p>\n<h5 id=\"you-come-across-as-very-down-to-earth-i-heard-that-you-like-to-describe-yourself-as-a-scandinavian-artist-are-you-aginast-diva-esque-bravado\">You come across as very down to earth. I heard that you like to describe yourself as a Scandinavian artist: are you aginast diva-esque bravado?<\/h5>\n<p>Absolutely. I played at a showcase here in Aarhus once and\u00a0they had ahugebillboard saying \u2018The new diva in Denmark\u2019, and I thought \u2018is that a compliment?\u2019.<\/p>\n<h5 id=\"i-think-people-get-mixed-up-with-the-meaning-behind-that-word-female-superstar-or-prima-donna-theres-a-big-difference\">I think people get mixed up with the meaning behind\u00a0that word: female superstar, or prima donna\u00a0\u2013 there\u2019s a big difference.<\/h5>\n<p>My bandmates and I were saying earlier that you just can\u2019t be full of yourself here in Denmark: the industry is so small.<\/p>\n<h5 id=\"janteloven-the-scandinavian-view-that-individual-success-and-achievement-are-somehow-negative\">Janteloven (the Scandinavian view that\u00a0individual success and achievement are somehow negative)?<\/h5>\n<p>Yeah, which is horrible, but I think I\u2019m influenced by it in my sense of ego. I see myself as pretty humble. I have a \u2018we\u2019ll see how it goes\u2019 kind of attitude.\u00a0You\u2019re only as good as your last record or show.<\/p>\n<h5 id=\"you-have-us-citizenship\">You have US citizenship?<\/h5>\n<p>No.\u00a0If i\u2019m going to work in LA, I\u2019ll look into it. There\u2019s so\u00a0much music-making and writing going on there, so I\u2019m considering it. I think I started at university too early. I wasn\u2019t completely sure what I wanted to do.<\/p>\n<p>I was singing backing vocals for a band called OKAPI. When Carl Barsk heard me sing, he was interested, so we thought we\u2019d work together. I had written and composed stuff, and had some finished songs and some sketches. \u2018Need to know\u2019 was almost done, for example. Carl and I started working and then\u00a0Frederik Carstens got involved. We sent out some demos, and before we knew it, we had\u00a0an offer from Sony.<\/p>\n<p>I was supposed to go to Hamburg for my last year of my masters, but then I had a record deal, so couldn\u2019t turn it down.\u00a0The singer in me didn\u2019t believe this was something you could actually do full-time. I thought I was an academic and that music was just a hobby. Now I definitely see myself as a musician.<\/p>\n<h5 id=\"your-music-is-quite-radio-friendly-pop-but-i-can-hear-your-soul-jazz-rnb-influences-how-much-of-your-sound-comes-from-you-and-how-much-from-your-producers\">Your music is\u00a0quite radio-friendly pop, but I can hear your soul\/jazz \/RnB influences.\u00a0How much of your sound comes from you and how much from your producers?<\/h5>\n<p>I\u2019m excited for you to hear the concert tomorrow. The new stuff is very much me. I do make pop for sure, \u00a0but I draw on a lot of different genres. Right now I\u2019m listening to a lot of house and hip-hop, so there\u2019s a bit more bass in the ones I\u2019m working on. My voice is quite jazzy, but the productions are varied. The new stuff is maybe a bit more Disclosure-esque. I\u2019ve moved a bit away from straight-up RnB-pop.<\/p>\n<h5 id=\"its-more-of-a-harder-street-sound\">It\u2019s more of a harder, street sound?<\/h5>\n<p>Yeah, it\u2019s a bit more of a punch, than a caress.<\/p>\n<h5 id=\"im-excited-to-hear-it-how-do-you-feel-about-covers-like-the-hotline-bling-cover-by-erykah-badu-are-you-open-to-making-some\">I\u2019m excited to hear it.\u00a0How do you feel about covers? Like the Hotline Bling cover by Erykah Badu? Are you open to making some?<\/h5>\n<p>I like doing new interpretations of of old songs \u2013 I love \u2018Crush\u2019 by Jai Paul, for example.\u00a0I did a cover of \u2018In Your Eyes\u2019 by Kylie Minogue, which I think we\u2019ll do a live video session of soon. We played it recently at a show and it went down well, but I have so many new songs of my own, so I just wanted to do them.<\/p>\n<h5 id=\"later-im-interviewing-emil-from-m-i-l-k-which-he-describes-as-a-flydende-kollektiv-fluid-collective-how-would-you-feel-about-being-involved-in-something-like-that\">Later I\u2019m interviewing Emil from M.I.L.K., which he describes as a flydende kollektiv (fluid collective). How would you feel about being involved in something like that?<\/h5>\n<p>That was kind of how I started off in Aarhus, in the Hukaos\u00a0kollektiv, with which I was affiliated but not a part of per se. I think it\u2019s a cool way to look at music \u2013 it becomes one big project that\u2019s everyone\u2019s property. Sometimes the creation process can be a bit too much about cuts, so I think the collective spirit is beneficial.<\/p>\n<h5 id=\"lets-end-by-talking-about-being-a-woman-in-the-music-industry-showing-flesh-is-something-you-had-said-you-do-not-want-to-do\">Let\u2019s end by talking about being a woman in the music industry \u2013\u00a0showing flesh is something you had said you do not want to do\u2026<\/h5>\n<p>I don\u2019t feel strong on stage wearing a bikini.\u00a0Women have been taking their clothes off for so long, for me it doesn\u2019t feel like the modern thing to do. The question is \u2018do we have to do it to be interesting?\u2019 If the music is good enough, then I don\u2019t think so. Let\u2019s just stick to the music! Jay-Z is never twerking. I saw a performance of \u2018Drunk in love\u2019 with he and Beyonc\u00e9 where she was in a bathing suit and he was fully dressed\u2026<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/31tGmgFaeGc?version=3&rel=1&showsearch=0&showinfo=1&iv_load_policy=1&fs=1&hl=en-US&autohide=2&wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>In Musikhuset\u2019s Store Sal, the crowd cannot sit still, moved by <strong>Anya<\/strong>\u2018s infectious energy. She commands the stage like her equally strong, female idols, but without provocation and there is not a bathing suit in sight. The new tracks she performs are as catchy as those we\u2019ve heard before and there\u2019s a connection with the audience \u2013 we don\u2019t feel like mere spectators, but rather like friends of hers. She speaks to us between songs in a relaxed, amiable tone and introduces her band, as though we were in her living room.
