Round 3<\/strong> is here and was harder to defend than I’d previously thought. Placing an artist against this Mangue Beat movement wasn’t easy. And I honestly think I’ve failed. I could only think of one French artist : Mathieu Chedid a.k.a. -M-<\/strong>. He ticked all the criterias albeit, without the same panache as Murilo’s pick for this third Round:\u00a0Chico Science & Na\u00e7\u00e3o Zumbi versus Matthieu Chedid.\u00a0<\/strong>I’ve included 3 track form Chico Science<\/strong> so you get a better feel for the music and will put 3 tracks from -M- to compensate…Here’s what Murilo had to say about this weeks submission :<\/div>\n

\"\"<\/a>What I have to share now, Is for me, the most important movement since Tropicalia (actually, nothing really happened in Brasil since them). I’m talking about Mangue Beat<\/strong>, which people wrongly associate to a genre of music. Mangue Beat is a movement of people interested in pop culture in general and tired of been “raped” by everything coming throughout TVs and radios in a\u00a0metropolitan area\u00a0where 50% of the inhabitants live in slums. The biggest\u00a0characteristic\u00a0of the movement, was the interest of involving local cultures like Ciranda, Samba de Coco, Maracatu, all mixed with hip hop, rock, punk or anything you like, not only in the music department, but also fashion, poetry, graphic arts,\u00a0theater, etc.\u00a0Chico Science<\/strong> was the main articulator for the movement and the Chico Science & Nacao Zumbi’s\u00a0front man. Chico died at the age of 30 in a car accident and he left two albums. Rolling Stones Magazine included Chico Science in the list of the 100 Most Important Artist in the Brazilian Music in\u00a016\u00aa, and his 2 albums included in the TOP 100 Best Albums of Brazilian Music,\u00a0\u00a0Da Lama ao Caos\u00a0in\u00a013\u00aa\u00a0place and Afrociberdelia in\u00a018\u00b0. The\u00a0mangue bit<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0mangue beat<\/strong>\u00a0movement is a cultural movement created circa 1991 in the\u00a0city\u00a0of\u00a0Recife\u00a0in Northeast\u00a0Brazil\u00a0in reaction to the cultural and economical stagnation of the city. The movement largely focuses on music.<\/p>\n

The movement has its own\u00a0manifesto,\u00a0Caranguejos com C\u00e9rebro<\/em>\u00a0(or “Crabs\u00a0with\u00a0Brains” in\u00a0English), written in 1992 by singer\u00a0Fred 04and DJ\u00a0Renato L<\/strong>. Its title refers to Recife’s inhabitants as crabs living in Recife’s swamp and mangrove environment. A major symbol associated with mangue bit is that of an antenna stuck in the mud receiving signals from all over the world.<\/p>\n

Mangue bit<\/em>\u00a0can be divided into two distinct waves: the first in the early 1990s led by the music groups\u00a0Chico Science\u00a0&\u00a0Na\u00e7\u00e3o Zumbi(Zumbi’s Nation)\u00a0and\u00a0Mundo Livre S\/A\u00a0(Free World Inc.), and the second in the early 2000s led by\u00a0Re:Combo\u00a0(a\u00a0copyleft\u00a0movement that uploads half-sampled music for download) and\u00a0Cordel do Fogo Encantado\u00a0(a music group that started as a roving theatre troupe with roots in a form of literature known as\u00a0literatura de cordel<\/em>\u00a0(“twine literature”)).<\/p>\n

The original movement named itself\u00a0mangue bit<\/em>,\u00a0mangue<\/em>\u00a0referring to Recife’s mangroves and\u00a0bit<\/em>\u00a0to the computer\u00a0bit\u00a0central to the movement’s\u00a0electronic music\u00a0influences. Since then, mangue bit has far more commonly, albeit mistakenly, been referred as\u00a0mangue beat<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Nowadays there are some bands that include this references, like\u00a0Autopl\u00e1gio.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n

\"\"<\/a>This is my chance to shine here…It’s gonna be hard, but I’m up for the challenge. I’ve chosen Mathieu Chedid<\/strong> to go against\u00a0Chico Science & Na\u00e7\u00e3o Zumbi <\/strong>solely because he’s the only one in my books to have the same-ish kind of approach to music. Mixing different genres into a whole new one… and has this image around a fictional guitar player (see pictures). Mathieu Chedid is not only one great guitar player, he also writes beautiful lyrics for his songs. He is very well known here in France, acclaimed singer-songwriter and has worked with many other influencial acts around France including but not limited to Vanessa Paradis (or Johnny Depp’s ex-wife, depends how you see it), Johnny Halliday etc… His tracks are very guitar heavy and full of groove. The tracks I’m sharing today are all taken from a live album so you get the full scope of his stage presence…. You can singalong to his tracks too, the lyrics aren’t too hard to memorize… Here are the 3 tracks I promised, I highly recommend you listen to this 11 minute “Machistador” masterpiece (remember this is all live recorded) \u00a0:<\/p>\n
