THE BIGGEST \u2018BAIT N\u2019 SWITCH\u2019\u00a0IN HISTORY?<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

This has been brewing since around May. At least that\u2019s when we first started noticing it here at Dangerous Minds and we certainly weren\u2019t the only ones.<\/p>\n

Spring of 2012 was when bloggers, non-profits, indie bands,\u00a0George Takei<\/a>, community theaters, photographers, caterers, artists, mega-churches, high schools, tee-shirt vendors, campus coffee shops, art galleries, museums, charities, food trucks, and a near infinite variety of organizations; individuals from all walks of life; and businesses, both large and small, began to detect\u2014for it was almost imperceptible at first\u2014that the volume was getting turned down on their Facebook reach<\/strong><\/em>. Each post was now being seen only by a fraction of their total \u201cfans\u201d who would previously have seen them.<\/p>\n

But it wasn\u2019t just the so-called \u201cfan pages,\u201d individual Facebook users were also starting to notice that they weren\u2019t seeing much in their newsfeeds anymore from the various entities they \u201cliked\u201d\u2014or even updates from their closest friends and family members. Something was amiss, but unless you had a larger \u201cdata set\u201d to look at\u2014or a formerly thriving online business that was now getting\u00a0creamed<\/em>\u2014it probably wasn\u2019t something that you noticed or paid that much attention to.<\/p>\n

When we first noticed the problem, our blog had about 29,000 Facebook \u201clikes.\u201d Our traffic was growing 20% month over month, but our Facebook fans grew at a far faster pace. We were getting hundreds of new \u2018likes\u201d every day. Still do. As I write this, our Facebook fans now number over 53,000, not quite double what it was then, but give it another month or so and it will be.<\/p>\n

53,000 is a more than respectable number of Facebook fans for a blog that\u2019s only been around for a little over three years. So why is it that our pageviews\u2014our actual inventory, what we sell to advertisers\u2014coming from Facebook shares are off by\u00a0half to two thirds<\/em>\u00a0when the number of new \u201clikes\u201d has risen so dramatically during this same time period?!?!<\/p>\n

In a widely read\u2014and widely shared on Facebook\u2014NY Observer article titled \u201cBroken on Purpose: Why Getting It Wrong Pays More Than Getting It Right<\/a>,\u201d (emailed to me by a friend, a prominent blogger, with the subject line: \u201cWhy putting a lot of energy into building a Facebook presence is a sucker\u2019s game<\/strong>\u201d) PR strategist and social media expert Ryan Holiday succinctly laid out the case against the damage Facebook had inflicted upon its most active users with its recently rolled out Promote \u201coption\u201d:<\/p>\n

It\u2019s no conspiracy. Facebook acknowledged it as recently as last week: messages now reach, on average, just 15 percent of an account\u2019s fans. In a\u00a0wonderful coincidence<\/a>, Facebook has rolled out a solution for this problem: Pay them for better access.<\/p>\n

As their advertising head, Gokul Rajaram,\u00a0explained<\/a>, if you want to speak to the other 80 to 85 percent of people who signed up to hear from you, \u201csponsoring posts is important.\u201d<\/p>\n

In other words, through \u201cSponsored Stories,\u201d brands, agencies and artists are now charged to reach their own fans\u2014the whole reason for having a page\u2014because those pages have suddenly stopped working.<\/p>\n

This is a clear conflict of interest. The worse the platform performs, the more advertisers need to use Sponsored Stories. In a way, it means that Facebook is broken, on purpose, in order to extract more money from users. In the case of Sponsored Stories, it has meantraking in nearly $1M a day<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I love how Rajaram phrases that so delicately: \u201cSponsoring posts is important.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s perhaps the most understated stick-up line in history,\u00a0worthy of a James Bond villain calmly demanding that a $365 million dollar ransom gets collected from all the Mom & Pop businesses who use Facebook<\/strong>. How many focus groups do you reckon it took until Facebook\u2019s highly paid marketing and PR consultants finally arrived at such an innocuous phrase for describing information superhighwayrobbery?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

\nDO THE MATH (!)<\/strong><\/p>\n

At Dangerous Minds, we post anywhere from 10 to 16 items per day, fewer on the weekends. To reach 100% of of our 50k+ Facebook fans they\u2019d charge us $200 per post. That would cost us between $2000 and $3200 per day\u2014but let\u2019s go with the lower, easier to multiply number. We post seven days a week, that would be about $14,000 per week, $56,000 per month\u2026\u00a0a grand total of $672,000<\/strong>\u00a0for what we got\u00a0for free<\/em>\u00a0before Facebook started turning the traffic spigot down in Spring of this year\u2014wouldn\u2019t you know it\u2014right around the time of their badly managed IPO.<\/p>\n

Whenever the controversy raging over Facebook\u2019s exorbitant Promote fees gets covered in the media, I\u2019ve noticed that the comments have been very telling. Opinion seems to be about nine to one against it. Some in the \u201cit\u2019s a free country\u201d section of the peanut gallery maintain that the new Promote \u201coption\u201d isn\u2019t extortion, just\u00a0capitalism, baby,<\/em>\u00a0and furthermore that disgruntled Facebook users have the simple option to seek out other venues that are free such as\u00a0Twitter<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Google+<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

That\u2019s true. They are right of course, in a strict free market logic, but this would be an unsophisticated viewpoint to hold if you are the CEO of a multi-billion dollar concern like Facebook. It surely doesn\u2019t take a Harvard degree, does it, to figure out that Facebook\u00a0so aggressively angering their user base<\/em>\u00a0by inserting themselves into the equation in this way, is perhaps\u2014if only because of the size of the company\u2019s market cap\u2014the single most misguided thing a major corporation has ever\u00a0deliberately<\/em>done, bar none, in the entire history of American capitalism and the world.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

What else would come even close?\u00a0<\/em>New Coke?<\/p>\n

These comments,\u00a0from that same NY Observer article<\/a>, spell out what this all really means and lays bare why Facebook\u2019s ham-fisted money grab is so\u00a0staggeringly inept:<\/em><\/p>\n

I run a Facebook page with 15,000 fans. That\u2019s 15,000 people who have consciously signed up for our website updates and want it to appear in their newsfeed. Yet, we\u2019re having exactly the same problem this article chronicles. We\u2019re barely reaching 15-20% of our fan page and we\u2019re sharing stuff that always used to be popular. Facebook for us was always a vehicle to drive traffic to our website (just like our email list, twitter page, etc). It\u2019s become less and less valuable as a tool to do this due to Edgerank and Facebook wanting to charge you to reach the audience you\u2019ve ALREADY paid to reach. It\u2019s a betrayal. It\u2019s just not worth it to pay $100 to reach all of our fans for one article. As a small business, I\u2019m starting to care less and less about Facebook and I\u2019m not alone. They need to get rid of Edgerank and get rid of Sponsored Posts.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

A fellow named Bill Downey replied to that comment. Imagine your name is Mark Zuckerberg as you read the following:<\/p>\n

I have a similar experience, my page has over 40,000 fans and when Facebook started this the traffic to my website dropped from 30,000 a day to 5,000 a day. I tried paying for extra reach but it\u2019s not worth it for a small site like mine. The fee they charge I can not make up thru ad revenue. It\u2019s probably fine for McDonalds page or Coke who can afford $200 per post for the full reach. I would be all for paying if the cost to play wasn\u2019t so steep, they need to come up with better scaling for the fees for smaller pages. They don\u2019t care about the little guys when they can sock it to the big companies. The worst part of it though is the lying to our fans that sign up to see our content and then never do unless they fall in that 15% group. Facebook has a number of other issues that make most of its users hate it. I know I despise it and I am desperately trying to find a way to replace it for promotion.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cI despise it.\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0Hear that beleaguered holders of Facebook stock?<\/em>\u00a0That kind of talk would make my blood run cold. How many companies can you name that you\u00a0actively despise?<\/em><\/p>\n

For online publishers who depend on \u201cpage views\u201d to sell advertising against\u2014and who have invested considerable time and effort courting Facebook fans\u2014the company\u2019s new policies are particularly galling:\u00a0Imagine losing 85% of your inventory and then being asked to pay a\u00a0daily<\/em>\u00a0king\u2019s ransom\u2014more than it\u2019s even worth to you\u2014to get it back!<\/strong><\/p>\n

Netflix was only trying to soak you for another $6 a month,\u00a0not starve you to death!<\/em><\/p>\n

NOT\u00a0EXACTLY<\/em>\u00a0A MONOPOLY\u00a0BUT, HEY, CLOSE ENOUGH!<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Personally, as a publisher of a medium readership blog, I used to get a great deal from using Facebook\u2014but I understood it to be a two-way\u00a0reciprocal arrangement<\/em>because I was driving traffic back\u00a0to<\/em>\u00a0Facebook as well, and reinforcing their brand awareness with prominent widgets on our blog\u2014but like Bill and Jonathan here, we\u2019re actively seeking out other ways of driving traffic to the site now. With this very post\u2014which will likely be the first and\u00a0very last<\/em>\u00a0thing we\u2019ll ever pay to promote on Facebook\u2014we\u2019re hoping to increase sign-ups to our daily newsletter (sign up at the top of this page),\u00a0our Twitter feed<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0our Google+<\/a>\u00a0page<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

We simply can\u2019t afford to pay Facebook $2000 to $3200 a day and we can\u2019t afford to do nothing, either.\u00a0Their shockingly greedy business plan offers us no alternative and we\u2019re not alone.<\/strong>\u00a0The Facebook management team have obviously never read the classic business motivational parable\u00a0Who Moved My Cheese?<\/a><\/em>\u00a0They should buy a few hundred copies and spread \u2018em around the office so the behavior of the mice won\u2019t seem so confusing to them!<\/p>\n

So we\u2019re doing the $2000 Facebook Promote package for this very post as a one-shot deal. It promises that 1.7 million people\u2014all of our \u201cfans\u201d and also their friends\u2014will see it in their newsfeeds.\u00a0\u00a0Will Facebook even allow it past their human approval process for promoted posts?<\/strong>\u00a0There\u2019s noting in this post that violates\u00a0any<\/strong>\u00a0of their policies and guidelines, but how long, I wonder, will they allow it to spread through their millions and millions of data-streams? Will I have \u201cfree speech\u201d on Facebook if I pay them $2000?\u00a0The way I look at it, this is what I have to do to get Mark Zuckerberg\u2019s attention to let him know that he\u2019s killing our business.<\/strong><\/p>\n

It will be interesting to see how this experiment turns out. But make no mistake about it. Had Facebook debuted the Promote \u201coption\u201d with a more reasonable rate card that would apply to frequently updated blogs and media outlets\u2014something akin to \u201cbook rate\u201d at the post office\u2014we\u2019d have been willing to pay between $7 to $10 a post. Facebook WOULD have made around $2500 to $3000 a month from Dangerous Minds, every month. That\u2019s around $30,000 a year, but apparently the price of a new car is not enough for Facebook to want to cultivate Dangerous Minds as a customer! Instead, we\u2019re left with\u00a0no options<\/em>\u00a0save for putting our efforts into\u00a0Google+<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0Twitter<\/a><\/strong>, and our daily email newsletter.<\/p>\n

Ironic, isn\u2019t it, that the one time we\u2019re willing to pay Facebook\u2019s insane rates, is also likely to be the last time we use Promote. We\u2019re even willing\u00a0to pay them<\/em>\u00a0to reduce our dependence on Facebook\u2014how else to regain what they took from us save for a stunt like this one\u2014and so it finally seems that this relationship has gone properly\u00a0toxic.<\/strong><\/p>\n

NONE DARE CALL IT\u00a0ANTITRUST<\/a>?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Consider this, if they\u2019re charging a blog the size of Dangerous Minds $200 per post, what would a major metropolitan newspaper, with dozens of sections and hundreds of individual daily articles and blog posts that relies heavily on Facebook for web traffic, have to pay out to them just to get\u00a0their old traffic back?<\/em>\u00a0It would amount to tens of millions of dollars per year. Facebook are angering not just indie bloggers, small business owners, non-profits and rock bands, but people employed by mainstream media outlets who have seen their hard-earned traffic shrink by as much as 85%. Consider how tenuous it already is to work at a newspaper\u2014where there is about as much job security as there is in seasonal strawberry picking, if not far less\u2014and then the rug gets pulled out from under them\u00a0like this<\/em>?<\/p>\n

The medium and small blogs are already up in arms about Facebook\u2019s extortionate Promote fees. What\u2019s wrong with this picture from a marketing and public relations standpoint when writers for The New York Times, Washington Post, Gawker, Buzzfeed, Business Insider, Boing Boing, Laughing Squid or Huffington Post begin to \u201cdespise\u201d Facebook, too? I wonder what Arianna Huffington and Rupert Murdoch will make of this when it\u2019s brought to their attention?\u00a0This is a very big deal.<\/em><\/p>\n

Summing up, Facebook has taken a pee in their own pool from quite a lofty height, turning vast armies of \u201cinfluentials\u201d against the company, people who are now making plans\u2014born of necessity\u2014to bolt from that pool and to stop putting any effort there. Furthermore, Facebook\u2019s greedy grab will have the knock-on effect of causing many blogs to simply throw in the towel, diminishing Facebook\u2019s own business ecosystem and Facebook\u2019s value to its own users to the point where only Axe Deodorant, Taco Bell and Nike will be showing up in your Facebook newsfeed, which after all, is pretty much\u00a0the sole point<\/strong>\u00a0of Facebook in the first place! They\u2019ve\u00a0deliberately<\/em>\u00a0broken their own product\u2019s biggest selling point.\u00a0Whose<\/em>\u00a0idea was that?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Facebook Promote story is just now beginning to pick up speed and will soon reach critical mass. Have you tried posting anything to a friend\u2019s Facebook wall in the last couple of days?\u00a0Try it now and see what happens.<\/em><\/p>\n

If Google plays their cards right, they\u2019ll be able to kick Facebook right in the teeth when they\u2019re already reeling from a self-inflicted wound. An online advertising campaign touting how\u00a0\u201cGoogle+ will never charge you, that\u2019s a promise\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0would bespeaking directly<\/em>\u00a0to the Jonathans and Bills of the Internet. Google would simply be crazy not to try to capitalize on these head-scratching missteps every way they can. If anything can boost Google+, it\u2019s Facebook\u2019s management team.\u00a0All Google has to do is sit back and wait.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I can sympathize with Facebook\u2019s travails on the stock market and I can appreciate that they are providing a value\u2014a great one, unprecedented, really\u2014by connecting such a vast number of human beings in an electronic global village. But I can\u2019t pay them $2000 a day and $672,000 a year for the exact same product that I was getting for free back in March!<\/strong><\/p>\n
