Dark Light

Round 4 of our popular BRA/NCH series is now officially live after some lateness from my side… I apologize. But fear not, this week is quality. Let me remind you what BRA/NCH is :

In a joint effort to expand our respective iTunes libraries, and broaden our musical landscapes, we jointly thought this would be the perfect opportunity to showcase the best of both worlds. Murilo battling against Sodwee in death matches between two countries, with our respective musical scenes as weapons. In our case, Brazil and France.

  1. Each country has to submit a local artist.
  2. The artist or band must sing in french for Sodwee, Portuguese for Murilo.
  3. Each opponent will submit an artist or band of similar genre.
  4. Each submission has to be different, if same artist/band, he/they must evolve in a different project.
  5. We will enable readers to vote for their favorite submission for each round.

Sodwee’s pick for this battle :

Françoise Madeleine Hardy (French: [fʁɑ̃.swaːz aʁ.di]; born 17 January 1944) is a French singer, actress and astrologer. Hardy is aniconic figure in fashion, music and style… This track was recently featured in Wes Anderson’s “Moonrise Kingdom” as part of the soundtrack… I’ve added the lyrics in French. It’s a classic french memorabilia track. Very melancholic…  She is uber-shy too :

Because of her difficult upbringing Hardy became painfully shy — a trait which is still part of her character today. When asked about her shyness in an interview with John Andrew, broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 2011 she said:

“I thought at first my parents were divorced — at that time it was not a good thing, it was a kind of shame. My father didn’t help much financially my mother, and all the other girls, little girls, were dressed differently than I was — their parents had more money…I didn’t enjoy at all everything, the trappings, when all of a sudden you become very famous… [on being taken up by the fashion houses] it was work, things I had to do, a chore – I didn’t enjoy it at all…It is quite impossible to stand — to be admired too much — it is not a normal situation…I don’t like that at all…I am not comfortable with my professional life really, so the word ‘icon’- it’s as though you were talking about someone else, it’s not me really…I feel happy when I’m on my bed, in my room with a good book.”

Françoise Hardy – Le Temps De l’Amour [audio:http://sodwee.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/05-Le-Temps-De-Lamour.mp3]

Murilo’s answer :

Had to think for a few minutes to not offer you some Brazilian cliché like Elis Regina, Marisa Monte or even Gal Costa (don’t really like her, but not important now)… We have plenty more and I think you know that. I also thought when I first heard your pick, “Hell yeah, that’s how a French song sounds like in my imagination” and yes, it reminds me a lot Wes Anderson movies like The Darjeeling Limited. So I came up with something that you can say is from Brazil, and for me, so far the best voice Brazil has: deep, emotional, clear and powerful.
Virginia Rodrigues (born Salvador, December 31, 1964) was discovered by Caetano Veloso. Virginia Rodrigues is quite unknown in Brazil (Yep, I know, normally we are busy listening to crap disposable summer songs in the radio). She spends most of the time singing in jazz festivals around the world…

Inude – We Share

Inude have sprung-up in our feed before with a brilliant little gem titled "So Easy" in the past. Giacomo, Flavio and Francesco formed the band back in 2014 and are originally from southern Italy. The electronic trio drips of soulfulness, spacey guitars and warm soundscapes that will take you on a journey.
