Ayanna Witter-Johnson is a vocalist, cellist and composer. In 2009 she was awarded a scholarship from the Manhattan School of Music where she earned a masters of music degree in classical composition. Whilst in New York she has composed music for The Actors Company Theater (TACT), was awarded an Artist in Residence at the International House, chosen to participate in a masterclass with German composer Matthias Pintscher and recently won the legendary Amateur Night Live at the Apollo Theater competition in Harlem 2010!
Quite a resume, right. Well we heard of her through Thy San, a local Paris based DJ who found her Bandcamp page and fell on the cover she did of The Police very own “Roxanne”. Now I wasn’t expecting much to start with as it’s probably the most covered song ever and I’ve heard some pretty nasty stuff over the years for that song alone. But Ayanna’s version just blew me away.
