Disclosure : Guy and Howard Lawrence, two brothers from the UK making house/future music. After their debut single on Moshi-Moshi Records in september 2010, the duo released a 4 track EP on Transparent Records a year after. 2012 saw the release of “Tenderly / Flow” and The Face EP on Greco-Roman. Their first single for Universal Record’s PMR was called “Latch”. On February 1st 2013, they released “White Noise”, featuring vocals by Aluna Francis from AlunaGeorge. Their debut album “Settle” was released on June 3rd , preceded by the single “You & Me” released on April 28th and premiered by Annie Mac on BBC Radio One on April 19th.
Ariel Pink : born Ariel Marcus Rosenberg on June 24, 1978) is a Los Angeles based experimental/pop musician. Pink boasts a cult following and endorsements from more widely known artists such as fellow founding Paw Tracks group Animal Collective. After years of recording in relative seclusion in the hills of Los Angeles, Ariel Pink (the first non-Animal Collective member on the Paw Tracks roster) made his official Paw Tracks debut with The Doldrums. Recording at home with a guitar, bass, keyboard, and 8-track (the drum sounds were created with his mouth).
Ariel Pink blends Lite FM and warped lo-fi pop into something by turns beautiful and confusing. Some may find his personal yet detached approach highly addictive, while others may be instantly turned off by the obvious lo-fi production and the vocal drumtracks.
Danny Brown : Born Daniel Sewell on March 16, 1981, Danny Brown is a hip hop artist from the Dexter-Linwood area of Detroit, Michigan. Danny is an unconventional hip hop artist employing multiple flows and cadences thus the moniker of “The Hybrid”. His style varies from low pitched gravelly tones to a manic, high pitched, squawk. His lyrics, often dealing with the truth of living in Detroit; poverty, drug abuse, desperate circumstances, etc and his own experiences in the motor city, from selling drugs to underground parties in Detroit’s rave scene juxtaposing those topics with a humorous narrative told ferociously over avant-garde production choices.
Warpaint : Warpaint is a psychedelic rock band which formed in 2004 in Los Angeles, California, United States. The band consists of Jenny Lee Lindberg (vocals, bass), Emily Kokal (vocals, guitar), Theresa Wayman (vocals, guitar) and Stella Mozgawa (drums). The band’s original drummer, Shannyn Sossamon, left the band in 2008 and was replaced by Mozgawa. The band weaves intricate guitar lines, hypnotic vocals, and driving post-punk rhythms into gorgeous, sprawling songs that skirt the line between the soundscapes of psychedelia and intimacy. The group has gone through many line-up changes, including actress Shannyn Sossamon and Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist Josh Klinghoffer.
Junip : formed in 1998 in Gothenburg, Sweden, by José González (guitar, vocals), Elias Araya(drums) and Tobias Winterkorn (organ, moog). Their first 7-inch came out in 2000, but as José González’s career began to take off, their first substantial release, the self-released Black RefugeEP, came only in 2006 and their first full album, Fields, in 2010. The band’s second album, Junip, was released in April 2013.
The band’s sound may be familiar to those who have listened to José González’s critically acclaimed solo records, with organs, synths, and drums featured alongside his nylon-stringed guitar and distinctive voice. The songs are often dynamic, melodic and shadowy, with a remarkable sonic approach that is simultaneously intimate and atmospheric.
Jagwar Ma : an Australian rock outfit from Sydney. Their debut album, Howlin, was released in 2013, garnering critical acclaim, as well as praise from Noel Gallagher and comparisons to the Madchester and Baggymusic genres of the late 1980s and early 1990s. The band’s name is derived from Jono Ma’s surname and a painting of a jaguar found by the side of a road and given to the band by a friend. Winterfield states “He kinda gave it to us and it became this sort of omen. I took a photo of it and had it as the background on my phone, it was a weird thing.”
Colin Stetson : born and raised in Ann Arbor, MI and earned a degree in music from his hometown school, the University of Michigan, in 1997. Six years in San Francisco followed, then another four in Brooklyn, NY. Over this time, he developed his unique solo voice on saxophones and clarinets, culminating in the release of the album New History Warfare Vol. 1″ on Agoo Records in 2008. Stetson now resides in Montreal, QC, and performs regularly on assorted saxohones, clarinets, cornet, french horn and flute. Aside from his work as a soloist, Stetson has brought his talents to the stage and studio with dozens of artists over the past decade, including Tom Waits, Arcade Fire, TV on the Radio, Feist, Bon Iver, Laurie Anderson, Lou Reed, David Byrne, Jolie Holland, Sinead O’Connor, LCD Soundsystem, The National, Angelique Kidjo, and Anthony Braxton.
Deafheaven : an American post-black metal band that formed in 2010 in San Francisco, California. The group began as a two-piece with George Clarke and Kerry McCoy who recorded and self-released a demo album together. After a warm reception, Deafheaven recruited three new members and began to tour. Before the close of 2010, the band signed to Deathwish Inc. and later released their debut album Roads to Judah in April 2011. The follow-up album, Sunbather, was released on June 11, 2013 by Deathwish.
Petit Fantôme : former band member of François and the Atlas Moutains, Frenchman Pierre Loustaunau delivers poetic and grace to some real cosy pop that takes him to futuristic electro with some well infused R’n’B elements.
