15 15 resurfaces with Āfa : the ritual you didn’t know you needed
“āfa” by 15 15 (formerly known as Quinze Quinze) – the Parisian/Tahitian collective with a knack for bending time and genres across complete opposite time zones just dropped a new sonic pearl from their upcoming project, and let’s just say… we’re spiraling in blissful anticipation.
After hypnotizing us with the glitchy smoothness of “Le Jeune“, the ceremonial groove of “Varua,” and the lush crescendo of “Bolero,” the crew is back with “Āfa,” a track that sounds like it was recorded underwater, on a different planet, while sipping fermented uru juice.
The vocals float like ghostly chants caught in tropical reverb, the percussion slinks in sideways like a cat that knows it’s cooler than you, and the whole track shimmers with that signature 15 15 texture – otherworldly, polyrhythmic, and subtly hallucinogenic.
The track touches on the subject of mixed-race individuals that have roots in two different cultures as the title suggests and the meaning of mixed identity in people’s life stories. 15 15 as a collective are no strangers to that fact, being themselves rooted in two cultures that geographically sit at the antipodes of the planet and infusing the collective they represent with diverse and rich Culture.
It’s not pop. It’s not electro. It’s undeniably 15 15. And if this is what the next project sounds like, we’re all ears.
