Dark Light

London duo Babeheaven return after a four-year pause with Beloved, a tender, self-produced single out now via Scenic Route.

You know that feeling when you wake up from a nap so deep you forget what day it is? After a four-year float in the great cosmic waiting room. West London’s most emotionally intelligent duo Babeheaven are back on the radar with Beloved. Out now via tasteful label Scenic Route. It’s not so much a comeback as it is a quiet re-materialisation. Like when a memory slips back into your head mid-dishwashing and suddenly you’re weeping over a sponge.

Vocalist Nancy Andersen and musician Jamie Travis manage to deliver a gentle reintroduction that sounds like it was recorded under a duvet in a candlelit attic. Written mostly at home during a period of post-tour unraveling and pre-life re-aligning, Beloved is sparse, tender, and deliciously analog. All Wurlitzers, Mellotrons, and acoustic guitar gently circling a meditation on grief, love, and the ghosts that braid your hair in your sleep.

“Beloved is kind of a myth, a person, a place, a feeling, someone who’s gone but still present. She carries you, rocks you like a boat, combs your hair. She’s the passage of time,” Nancy explains.

Which, quite frankly, is the most poetically devastating way anyone has described a single since Sade invented emotions.

The track began as Nancy’s first solo writing and production effort. A big step that took place in the spiritual womb of her attic. Jamie later sprinkled in bass and drums with the soft precision of a man who’s read Virginia Woolf and knows how to stir a risotto. The result is something that feels simultaneously new and ancient, like a VHS tape of your dreams dubbed over a Portishead B-side.

And because the band refuses to stay only in your headphones, Babeheaven will return to the stage August 1 at the ever-sweaty, ever-iconic Moth Club. They’ll joined by kindred spirit Jack J. Expect tears, reverb, and several instances of staring dreamily into middle distance.
