Well, slap my eardrums and call it resurrection: Alabama Shakes have returned after a decade of radio silence with a brand-new single, “Another Life.” Their first original cut since the Grammy-magnet Sound & Color back in 2015, and, wait for it, their debut release under Island Records. Talk about stretching the dramatic pause.

Brittany Howard, queen of turning raw emotion into cosmic sermon, lays it out: the track is about the lives we juggle like mismatched socks. The what-ifs, the almosts, the near-misses, the tear-stained farewells, and those chance meetings that feel like they were ghostwritten by fate itself. In her words, “goodbye isn’t really goodbye—it’s more like I’ll see you later.” Which, let’s face it, is the most Alabama Shakes way of ripping your heart out while handing you a shot of bourbon.

“Another Life” doesn’t just sound like a comeback; it feels like a parallel universe folding in on itself. The Shakes’ signature cocktail of gritty blues, psychedelic swells, and Howard’s weathered howl is still very much intact. But aged like fine vinyl, dustier around the edges and richer in the middle.

Since parking the band in hiatus-ville back in 2018, Howard has been busy racking up her own cult following with Jaime (2019) and What Now (2023). But the real kicker? The Shakes are back on tour for the first time since 2017, with dates lined up through September. Consider this track the reintroduction nobody dared to hope for but everybody damn well needed.

So yes, “Another Life” is less a comeback single and more a cosmic handshake, between past selves, present selves, and the band that taught us how to ache in technicolor.
