Dark Light

Retro Kid rewinds the 90s with the wobbling soul of Think I Know

Think I Know drifts in like a half-remembered tape you forgot you loved. Built on a hip-hop/soul backbone steeped in 90s DNA, Retro Kid lets the beat breathe, never overcrowded, never trying too hard. The synths wobble just enough to feel human — slightly detuned, slightly warped — as if the track itself is reminiscing in real time.

Then there’s the flute. Unexpected, lightly cheeky, and perfectly placed. Pair that with subtly processed vocals and you’ve got a groove that doesn’t shout for attention but gently pulls you in. Nostalgia is the mood here, not as a gimmick, but as a texture.

At around the 2:50 mark, the track really opens up. A piano solo steps forward, surrounded by soft synth flourishes and bell-like accents that lift the whole piece a few inches off the ground. These are the details you don’t consciously clock as a listener — but they’re doing the heavy lifting. With a producer’s ear on, it’s clear the “colour” is what guides you through the track, much like a vanishing point in photography or painting, quietly directing your focus without ever announcing itself.

The name fits. Retro Kid is Jake Juba, a UK-born producer now based in Copenhagen, who describes his output as lush loops for worn-out electro kids. Think I Know does exactly that — warm, thoughtful, unflashy, and confident enough to let the mood linger.
