Rosalía’s LUX: Pop soars, algorithms burn
Rosalía has never done “just one thing.” She’s a genre contortionist with a PhD in shapeshifting — one minute flamenco, the next, cyberpunk reggaeton. El Mal Querer made us rethink tradition; Motomami made reggaeton look like performance art in an acid bath. But LUX? LUX is her Sistine Chapel. The ceiling’s higher, the echoes longer, and the ambition is quite simply biblical.
This isn’t pop. It’s a full-blown act of rebellion against the streaming shuffle generation. 18 tracks, four movements, sung in 13 languages, recorded with the London Symphony Orchestra. It’s as if Rosalía took a wrecking ball to pop music’s algorithmic factory, then built a cathedral from the debris, complete with gold leaf and distortion pedals.
The opener, “Sexo, Violencia y Llantas,” feels like holy ground with strings swelling, silence cracking open like stained glass. Rosalía doesn’t sing so much as summon. Then comes “Divinize,” a fever dream where creation myths rub shoulders with synth pads, and fruit tastes suspiciously like temptation.
And just when you’re getting comfortable — booh! — “Berghain” drops in, dragging Björk, Yves Tumor, and a Catalan choir into an operatic club ritual. It’s majestic, absurd, and entirely Rosalía at this point: equal parts devotional hymn and underground rave. Somewhere between Berlin and Bethlehem, the bass drops — and so does your jaw.
Her voice remains the gravitational center of LUX. On “La Yugular,” sung in Spanish and Arabic, she traces love as if it were tectonic. It quakes. It burns. It breathes. By the time “Magnolis” closes the album — all bells, strings, and phantom reverbs — you’re not listening anymore; you’re levitating.
This record is a slow-burn revelation. The anti-TikTok, the anti-scroll. LUX demands your full attention, then rewards it with transcendence. It’s less a playlist and more a pilgrimage: part spiritual quest, part art-school fever dream.
Whether it counts as “classical music” doesn’t matter. LUX is Rosalía’s reminder that pop can still be a place of danger, devotion, and divine weirdness. The modern world might run on speed and metrics. But Rosalía is here, kneeling at the altar of sound, lighting a candle for patience.
