Friendly Fires – “Lose All Your Friends”: back on the dance-floor
There are some bands you don’t realise you’ve missed until they suddenly reappear and your brain goes: oh yeah, these guys.
Friendly Fires are definitely one of them. After another lengthy stretch away, the St Albans trio returns with “Lose All Your Friends”, the first unmistakable taste of their long-awaited forthcoming release. And thankfully, it doesn’t feel like a desperate attempt to recreate their glory days. It feels like Friendly Fires simply plugging back in and remembering exactly what they do best.
Which is, essentially, making you dance while quietly questioning your life choices.
The band’s magic has always lived somewhere between indie guitars, electronic excess, disco grooves and Ed Macfarlane’s wonderfully elastic vocals. “Lose All Your Friends” taps straight back into that formula: euphoric, slightly melancholic, irresistibly rhythmic and just a little bit unhinged.
The title may suggest social collapse. The music suggests we should probably throw a party about it. And that’s the beauty of Friendly Fires. They understand that the dance-floor isn’t necessarily where you go because everything is fine. Sometimes it’s where you go because everything is absolutely not fine.
After the long road that eventually led to 2019’s Inflorescent, this new chapter feels less like a reunion and more like a band picking up the conversation where they left it. There’s familiarity here, but thankfully no museum-piece nostalgia.
“Lose All Your Friends” sounds like Friendly Fires in 2026: older, sharper, still gloriously incapable of standing still.
