No homework, just bangers
Summer’s over. The alarm is ringing. The fridge is empty. Somewhere, a child is being handed a brand-new pencil case and wondering why they’ve been punished with mathematics. Meanwhile, we’re back in class, although, thankfully, Cloud Droppings remains a strictly no-homework zone.
For this little Back To School edition, we’ve packed the satchel with four suitably unruly nuggets: Friendly Fires bringing the indie-disco magnetism, Turnstile getting their hardcore homework marked by Blood Orange, Standing On The Corner quietly colouring outside every conceivable line, and Sampa The Great reminding the entire classroom who’s actually in charge.
Four tracks. Four different kinds of trouble. Pens down. Speakers up. Class is in session.

Friendly Fires are back doing what Friendly Fires do best: making the prospect of going outside, dancing badly and developing a questionable crush on someone you met near the speakers sound like a perfectly reasonable life plan.
“Magnetic” has that familiar Friendly Fires fizz, bright guitars, elastic bass lines and enough rhythmic bounce to make sitting still feel like an administrative error. It’s sleek without being sterile, euphoric without reaching for the emergency glow sticks, and unmistakably built for that sweet spot between indie disco and full-on dance-floor nonsense.
Basically, the school bell has rung and Friendly Fires have decided PE is now compulsory.

Hall pass granted.
Turnstile and Blood Orange sounds, on paper, like the musical equivalent of putting a leather jacket in a fruit salad.
And yet, somehow, it works.
“LIGHT DESIGN: BLOOD ORANGE VERSION” takes Turnstile’s already kinetic energy and runs it through Dev Hynes’ hazier, more atmospheric filter. The guitars still have teeth, but there’s suddenly more air around them a woozy, almost dreamlike quality that turns the original’s physical punch into something stranger and more cinematic.
It’s hardcore after school, basically. Except somebody has replaced the gymnasium fluorescent tubes with soft purple lighting and put a very expensive synth in the corner.
Standing On The Corner has never sounded particularly interested in following the syllabus, and “Sonia” is no exception.
It feels less like a song you press play on and more like stumbling into somebody else’s half-remembered dream. Jazz, soul, electronics, fragments of voices and whatever else was lying around get shuffled into something loose, hazy and wonderfully difficult to pin down.
There’s a beautiful lack of urgency to it, the kind of track that makes time feel slightly broken. No obvious chorus. No desperate attempt to grab you by the collar. Just atmosphere, texture and a strange little universe quietly unfolding in front of you.
The teacher asked for an essay. Standing On The Corner handed in a collage made from receipts, cigarette packets and existential dread.
Somehow, it got an A. Extra credit for refusing to show your working.
Sampa The Great does not appear to have received the memo about easing us gently back into the school year.
“Simon Says” arrives with the energy of someone bursting through the classroom door five minutes late, throwing their bag onto the floor and immediately taking over the lesson.
The beat hits with purpose, Sampa’s delivery is commanding without ever feeling forced, and the whole thing carries that wonderfully restless quality she does so well. There’s swagger here, but also playfulness, a track that feels built around movement, rhythm and the simple pleasure of hearing an artist completely inhabit their own space.
Basically, if “Simon Says” tells you to move, you move. No questions. No appeals. No parent-teacher meeting.
Head prefect energy. Everyone else can fall in line.
And there we have it: four fresh excuses to avoid doing anything remotely productive. As ever, Cloud Droppings is here to remind you that the best things you can discover rarely appear on the curriculum anyway.
