Dark Light

‘Just Chill’ is the debut single from Toronto native liZa. Toronto is going through something of a musical golden age at the moment. It seems it’s breeding artistic output on a level with London, New York and Los Angeles. Let’s be frank and just call it ‘The Drake Effect.’

liZa’s debut is a restrained, understated slow jam. The production comes courtesy of Nate Smith. He does an outstanding job framing liZa’s vocal with sparse synths and 808’s without distracting from her tone. It’s a pretty straight-forward message. She just wants to ‘chill with you’, I’m good with that. The track chills you right out, it’s a summer sunset tune. The kind of thing you could listen to on the beach, in the city or on the bus.

She also manages to name check ‘Digimon’ (everybody’s second favourite animated ‘mon’ franchise) without it sounding completely ludicrous. I tried for ages to slip something about Beyblades into one of my singles. I couldn’t. It sounded stupid. ‘Nuff said.
