Dark Light

24 year-old Dan Bettridge has already some mileage on the counter having released a debut album titled ‘Asking For Trouble’. He’s back today with a brand new single “Hollywood Forever”. The kind of well-rounded single you’d expect from a seasoned, tried and tested blues or soul singer that has nothing else to prove. But after spending time in Silverlake, Los Angeles. Bettridge decided it was time to pour the Californian spirit, soul and imagery into his new production effort. The result on this first slice is impressively mature and balanced.

Hollywood Forever’ was written after spending time in LA, and a conversation I’d had with a producer about an artist who’d come to Hollywood looking for ‘the dream’. The age old story of getting caught up with the wrong people and the wrong things. It’s a comment on the ongoing exodus of people that go to that city. I’m not condemning it, on the contrary, I find it really interesting. The part of the song that repeats ‘Where ya coming from? Where ya going to?’ is something you hear from almost everyone you meet – “Where have you come from? What have you come here to become?

Brought up in the rural, coastal town of Ogmore-By-Sea in magnificent Wales, and knowing the background of how musical the Welsh heritage can be it is no surprise that Dan Bettridge comes along effortlessly with a distinctive vocals, raw and powerful blend of a unique voice paired with compelling songwriting makes me want to hear more from his upcoming album.
