Dark Light

I’m of the mind that there exists some hidden circuit deep in the human genome that only turns on given a perfectly stitched together string of piano chords. “Carousel”, the latest from 21-year-old Torontonian Jon Vinyl, seems as good a piece of evidence for this as anything – so long as that bristling feeling up the back of your neck can be considered scientific.

Of course, the silken instrumentation here is only the foundation upon which a great tune is built. To call an R&B singer’s vocals smooth is never much of a leap, but the melodies Jon weaves around and around on “Carousel” are smooth like a fleece blanket on a bad night: soft and bittersweet, a case study on the trials and tribulations of young love.

Honest, nostalgic, and outright gorgeous, “Carousel” is well worth taking for a ride.
