Dark Light

SDW026 was long to pop out, but the wait is over now boys & girls because I had a sift through the emptiness that it the music scene these days, I went deep into the blogging industry to find those little nujoums of the musical kind. Or more adequately put Binary Nujoums. But before that I would like you to take  a listen/look at this. It’s a band from Ghent in Belgium (as eloquently described by our friends at LAST.fm/wiki) :

Rambunctious. That’s the least you can say about Belgian beatbastards The Subs. Having already released a couple of underground dance maxis – ‘You Make Me Spill’, ‘Fuck That Shit’, ‘Substracktion’ – over the past years, they hit it hard in 2008, with ‘Kiss My Trance’, a punktrance-juggernaut of a hit single.

The track started off as a joke, the band wanted to see how far they could push the limits of the trance-genre and get away with it. A true jack-in-the-box, ‘Kiss My Trance’ turned out te be a massive cross-over success: in genuine guerilla-style, ‘Kiss My Trance’ peaked both commercial charts AND dj-lists – it terrorized the radio AND put club dancefloors on fire.

And so the band received thumbs up from the likes of Boys Noize, Philippe Zdar, T. Raumschmiere, Laurent Garnier and uh… Tiësto! And did remixes for Alex Gopher, Lotterboys, Plump DJs, Telex… So much for the joke then, The Subs are in business. For real:

The Subs are Jeroen De Pessemier aka Papillon (singer/producer), Wiebe Loccufier aka Tonic (half of dj-duo Starski & Tonic, heirs to the Culture Club-throne, as they took over the residency spot at the infamous Ghent club from 2 ManyDJs and The Glimmers) and Stefan Bracke aka l’entrepreneur also fronting the raverockband Foxylane.

The Subs are not your average ‘let’s mess around with some analogue machines’ band. They fought with the machines until a consistent album, a true body of work, came about. Bred on landmark nineties dance-albums from the likes of Daft Punk, The Chemical Brothers andUnderworld, Papillon is The Subs’ songwriter with an ear for a good hook and a catchy tune. Tonic is the dj/songwriter with a passion for brand new underground releases and innovative sounds, The Subs had made an album with songs lurking underneath the sounds. (There’s even a mellotron on the album – we kid you not, the retrofuturistic instrument The Beatles used on ‘Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds’!)

Now onto the SDW026 downloads you’ve been waiting for… There’s plenty of DOD (Download or Die) material thrown in there notably AVICII – who has remixed Robyn’s “Hang With Me” late last year – that today plays with yet another clubfloor pleaser in the good name of Kings Of Leon’s “Sex On Fire”… it is a killer dancefloor track I must admit ! Otherwise also to not be missed here is “The Sound” By Kevin Saunderson. Great track too ! Finally and amongst other, I will give props to the Eat More Cake mashup with one of the last decade hit single, talkin’ bout Crazy In Love to which MotherOfSodwee was kinda going crazy too in those prime years of R’n’B sensibility ! Anyway I hope you enjoy this sample pack ! Be sure to check the band/artists out in vivo. That’s where you get the best feel for a band/singer/DJ ! And it remains the best way you can actively support these artists.
