Dark Light

We consider ourselves extremely lucky sometimes, and hopefully it will continue in the future. So lucky in fact that we feel guilt striking after a moment like the one I experienced here. Archy Marshall also known as King Krule and previously named Zoo Kid. A Brit with a hell a lot of talent to spare raided the French capital for two days at the beginning of the week. One of the stops on his promotional sessions was the now famous Album de la Semaine TV show taping. Which we managed to attend. We had already covered King Krule / Zoo Kid in the past, for a Sundaze Playlist ages ago or even

Goes without saying we were uber-excited to finally witness the awesomeness live in a very small, quasi-private setting. A few lucky punters quietly got themselves seated in front of a seemingly toned down stage. A few lights here and there. The space felt pretty empty. But what ensued was out of this world. The band came on, greeted the crowd, and we were off for an 9 track setlist a lot of us attending would remember for many moons to come.

My favourite track so far “Rock Bottom” :

King Krule, 19 years of age, was supporting his newly dropped album 6 Feet Beneath The Moon. His cold, dark and brooding voice is what hits your senses first. Because nothing else will. You see a frail, auburn-haired chap with freckles, fitted out in overly large Marks & Spencers 3 piece suit (same goes for his bandmates). It acts as a decoy. Some trickery. Because as soon as he approaches the microphone, you sit on the edge of your seat eagerly waiting, what kind of sound will belt out from this skinny body.

It’s a set filled with emotions, we’re transported from airy ballads, to soulful pastures via jazz and electro and decidedly more urban settings. Leaves a light depressing state of mind. Just like you’d feel when your Cadbury chocolate bar nears the end, you know.

All the tracks were produced by him with the help of Rodaidh McDonald, and as his drummer said : “he’s quite the perfectionist”, and King Krule asked if he could retake a song twice as the guitar wasn’t tuned properly.

Introducing: The Nice Nice

When a band, or duo in this case, comes about and portrays themselves as an hybrid between Cigarettes After Sex meets Coldplay and that same band covers the almighty tracks of Chris Rea's uber-hit "Josephine". You have got to hear it for yourself and figure what it is all about.
